Doug Deming & The Jewel Tones featuring Dennis Gruenling at the Skyline Sunday August 9th

August 5, 2015

Doug Deming & The Jewel Tones featuring Dennis Gruenling will be on stage at the Skyline Sunday August 9th at 7:30pm. Acclaimed guitarist/vocalist Doug Deming and harmonica ace Dennis Gruenling – now both VizzTone recording artists – announce a new partnership to bring their music to a wider audience. Eastside Detroit native Doug Deming, now hailing from Florida’s Gulf Coast, has garnered widespread attention for his deft guitar work and memorable songwriting. With a nod to the likes of T-Bone Walker and Charlie Christian, as well as Luther Tucker and Robert Jr. Lockwood, Doug leaves his own mark whether swingin’ on the big jazz box, or playing straight up blues on the solid body Fender guitar. While playing the local Detroit scene in the early 90′s, major players began to take notice, and Doug spent much of the following years backing many of the day’s top touring blues artists, including Fabulous Thunderbirds frontman Kim Wilson, legendary Louisiana swamp bluesman Lazy Lester, Gary Primich, Chicago greats Johnny “Yard Dog” Jones, and A.C. Reed, as well as Detroit’s own Queen of the Blues, Alberta Adams. With a decade of touring and recording to his credit, Doug has earned his position alongside today’s heavies on the blues scene. Leading his band, The Jewel Tones, Doug continues to bring noteworthy traditional and original roots music to his audiences. Doug’s latest recording, What’s it Gonna Take, exhibits the outstanding guitar work and remarkable singing and songwriting that have become Doug’s calling card. Dennis Gruenling is without a doubt one of the baddest, swingingest, most innovative harp blowers on the planet. For the past fifteen years, Dennis has played with many top-notch traditional blues acts such as Snooky Pryor, Pinetop Perkins, A.C. Reed, Nappy Brown, and Homesick James, as well as his own original jump blues outfit “Jump Time”. For years critics and musicians worldwide have been praising how he blends both the blues harmonica and swing saxophone traditions, as he pioneers a whole new sound and direction for the harp. Also one of the world’s foremost blues harmonica instructors, Dennis is also in demand as a harmonica teacher and lecturer worldwide, in addition to the blues history knowledge he airs on his weekly “Blues & the Beat” radio program (WFDU-FM). Equally adept at performing, composing, arranging, and teaching, what fans remember most is the fun, energy, and emotional intensity of each and every show he is a part of. “Like World Champions…blues musicians Dennis Gruenling and Doug Deming are individually great talents who are even better when they come together as one of the most prolific duos on today’s contemporary American Blues scene. – MUSIC NEWS NASHVILLE “…one of the great tandems in blues music today” – BLUES JUNCTION “Doug Deming & The Jewel Tones are making a new thing out of the old-skool blues, and the results are highly addictive…Dennis rips the roof off with a chromatic harp workout…just swings with loads of energy and style.” – SUNDAY NIGHT BLUES PROJECT

Markey Blue playing at the Skyline

August 3, 2015

markey blue 1
We are super excited to have Markey Blue on our stage Friday August 7th at 7:30pm. This concert is included with regular admission to the Skyline. So come out Friday and enjoy the blues with Markey Blue from Nashville Tennessee. Keep reading to learn more about Markey Blue. HIGH-ENERGY DEBUT FROM MARKEY BLUE BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO CLASSIC SOUL Hey Hey propels co-leaders Markey and Ric Latina into the international spotlight with original songs, fresh grooves and some help from Stax legend Steve Cropper NASHVILLE, TN — Markey Blue’s debut album Hey Hey puts a fresh new spin on a classic sound. Bandleaders Markey and Ric Latina weave elements of timeless soul and R&B with hook-smart pop songwriting, cool grooves and fire-breathing arrangements, crafting a dozen songs that feature an A-list of Music City studio and stage musicians, including special guest former Allman Brothers Band member Jack Pearson. Steve Cropper, legendary Stax Records songwriter, artist and producer, also had a hand in assisting with vocal production of the closing track. Cropper, a Grammy-award winning songwriter whose credits include some of the greatest hits in soul music history, notably “In the Midnight Hour” and “(Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay,” offers this ringing endorsement: “What do you get when you have a great singer, a great band and great songs? A great project. Markey Blue, you have done it!” The proof, of course, is in the tracks that bring Hey Hey to vibrant life. The album, produced by Latina and Markey, includes “Ain’t No Angel,” a number driven to gritty dynamism by Markey’s powerhouse vocal performance and Latina’s rippling guitar. “When Love Comes Along,” a driving, horn-propelled ode to Cupid’s sting that’s already winning the attention of the “triple A” and blues radio formats, percolates over a big-boned house-party groove. Markey’s compelling, soft-edged performance in the heartbroken ballad “Baby I’m Crying,” lifts the song to emotional heights. The honey-sweet “Play Me” features elegant guitar by Pearson, who also co-wrote the tune. Throughout the disc Markey and Latina display their uncanny ability to draw on the wellspring of great soul music — particularly the Memphis-based sound of the Stax and Hi Records labels and Alabama’s Muscle Shoals studios — as a source of inspiration for delivering original numbers that seem satisfying familiar, but are buoyed with wide-eyed energy and zealous performances that make them ring distinctly contemporary. On every cut Latina proves he’s a one-man encyclopedia of R&B licks ‘n’ leads who also brings personal invention and a bold, cutting tone to the vocabulary. And Markey is a masterful singer whose voice ranges easily from burnished, horn-like melodic arcs to simmering introspection. As a team, they have seemingly limitless scope. Markey and Latina met at a club in the suburbs of Nashville on a night when their previous bands shared a bill. “Ric called me shortly after that and suggested we join forces,” Markey explains. As a new sound coalesced and grew, they expanded their trio to include horns and keyboards and resolved to cut a four-song EP. “As soon as Ric and I wrote our first song we knew we were onto something,” Markey says. “The writing process comes so easily for us. The ideas just flow.” And they kept flowing, until Markey and Latina had the raw material for Hey Hey. “Markey Blue has been a growing process for both Ric and myself,” Markey continues. “We both stepped outside our comfort zones to create something different, something new. We were looking for a new approach to a classic sound that would appeal to a wider audience, and together I think we’ve found it.” Even apart, Markey and Latina have impressive resumes. Markey had accumulated a wealth of performing experience before she became a songwriter. Her career ignited as a showgirl in Las Vegas, which led to appearances around the world. Next, she turned to acting in film and television before embracing stand-up comedy. By the time Markey turned to music as her full-time artistic outlet, she had become one of the country’s top female impressionists. The down-to-Earth songstress was on a small country label when she was relocated to Nashville, but eventually the lure of soul and R&B called her home. Once on the blues, soul and R&B path, Markey quickly became a rising talent in the roots music world — performing with, Taj Mahal, Candye Kane, Walter Trout, Delbert McClinton, Anson Funderburgh, and Bobby “Blue” Bland — before joining with Latina to form Markey Blue. Latina has a longstanding reputation as an inspired studio and stage guitarist, and as a songwriter and studio craftsman. Besides his session credits, his extensive touring history includes roadwork with Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams III, Collin Raye, Suzy Bogguss, Billy Dean, John Berry, Vern Gosdin, Kirk Whalum, Sherrié Austin, Gary Puckett and Rhonda Vincent. Although Hey Hey is a vital realization of Markey Blue’s sound and Markey and Latina’s songwriting and studio prowess, both leaders truly thrive on stage. Markey Blue performs well over 100 dates year. “Feeling the energy and the spontaneity of our big band in concert, and exercising the freedom we have to be creative on the spot, really electrifies us and the audience,” Markey says. “For us,” she continues, “Markey Blue is about putting the music we have in our hearts into the world. It’s also a constant way for Ric and myself to evolve as performers, writers and producers. The more our band play together, the more creative things become.”

Dave Muskett on stage at the Skyline Friday June 19th 7:30pm

dave muskett
Dave Muskett will performing at the Skyline Friday June 19th at 7:30pm. This is a free show with paid admission to the Skyline. After his show we will be showing Jurassic World and Spy. Here’s more about Dave. Dave Muskett is an award winning Blues guitarist delivering a sophisticated finger-style technique with his guitar, and a smooth, mature honesty with his voice. Serving well both old masters such as Doc Watson, Fury Lewis, and Robert Johnson, as well as such contemporary’s as Taj Mahal, Roy Bookbinder, and Chris Smither.Piedmont, Rag Time, Traditional and Country-Blues all blend and fuse to form the refined composite that is the sound of Dave Muskett. Drawing from nearly three decades of professional performance, Dave is currently coming into his own as a rising songwriter, with upbeat, rag time infused tunes, as well as darker, deeper grooved blues songs. Muskett is also emerging as a true force on the Blues Festival scene. Performing primarily as a solo act, Dave Muskett has been honing his skills playing a wide variety of instruments and genres but found his true place playing the blues guitar. His acoustic act has been referred to as a stimulating and cerebral experience. Age 16 was the big turning point in Dave’s life. He got his first job in a burger joint, but more importantly he began playing his guitar in a rock and roll band, Black Heath, with local musicians 10 years his senior. A year later the band was playing bars and clubs around Indiana with Dave now occupying the lead guitar position, his parents had separated leaving Dave alone in what had been the family’s home. With no adult supervision other than a working rock band, finishing High School was not an option. When the oldest of his brothers moved back home, Dave was pushed out to make room for the brothers wife and children. “I was homeless for one day. Had it not been for the band, I would have been living under the South Main Street Bridge permanently.” By his mid-20s, Dave had married his longtime girlfriend Jacci and began building a family of their own, all the while playing in more bands than anyone can remember as guitarist, vocalist, bassist, or drummer, basically whatever was needed. The transition to finger-style blues guitar was a long, gradual process. Influenced earlier on by a Doc Watson record he heard at a friend’s house, Dave began to look farther and farther back in time at the music that was speaking to him louder than anything on the radio. “I just wasn’t getting anything out of those gigs any more. No rush, no challenge, no fire. Many times I was hired by a band to replace a missing member on guitar or drums or bass. Didn’t matter what kind of a band they thought they were, they all had very similar set lists. I’d go in with no practice; I’d look and sound like I had been to every rehearsal. I got many offers to join bands but I had had all I could take. I really had to search ‘inside’ myself and ask ‘what do I want to do?’ What is going to have to happen to make me feel accomplishment again? To make me feel the passion I have for my instrument? I found out, and to put it very simply, it’s growth. Turns out treading water is as good as drowning to me.” Dave once again found himself spending long hours alone with the guitar. But this time he was going back in time with Mississippi John Hurt, Pink Anderson, and others as his guide. Working hard at building his repertoire, then working even harder at landing a gig at the world famous Slippery Noodle Inn downtown Indianapolis. In the last two years Dave has had only two months without playing the Noodle. Most months Dave plays there twice. Muskett has also played two IBCs and three Blues Festivals in that time and has secured performances at future festivals including the Bradenton Blues Festival, Bradenton Florida in December 2014. “Now is the time for me to take bigger steps. I have much to offer and am now looking for the right professionals that can help me make the most of my drive, ambition, and creativity.” Some recent notes:•Winner of the 2012 Dayton OH Blues Challenge •Main Stage performer 2013 Dayton Winter Blues Fest •Winner 2013 Cincinnati Blues Challenge. •2013 International Blues Challenge participant, Memphis TN. •2014 International Blues Challenge Semi-finalist, Memphis TN. •Main Stage performer at the 2013 Cincy Blues Fest •Featured performer 2014 Cincy Winter Blues Fest •Monthly performer at the world famous Slippery Noodle Inn, Indianapolis. •Featured performer Elizabethtown KY Blues Fest May 2014 •In between acts performer 2014 Bradenton Blues Fest, Bradenton FL

Steely James at the Skyline

Steely James
Steely James will be on stage at 7:30pm Friday June 12th. On Independence Day in The United States of America, Nashroc Records released what could be the most powerful political album of all time-Free Speech Experiment by Steely James. This incredible, incendiary and important release by Steely James has made a statement that will reach far beyond the limits of the pop world. His mission with Free Speech Experiment seems not for fame, money or the trappings of success, but to get a message out from The People… to The Politicians. Through his incredible talents as a songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist, he is speaking for the masses in a way few are able to do. In many ways, Free Speech Experiment continues the US tradition of great protest singers from Woody Guthrie right through to Chuck D. Now the modern day protester, Steely James pulls no punches with songs such as Unmanned Police Drones, Things That Kill People, No More War, The Corporation, and Black Gold. People have eagerly embraced the message and are buying into James’ music. A nationwide acoustic tour is already in the cards. Bit by bit, town by town, his voice is being heard. James is not only singing a lament for the terrible wrongs that have been done to America by political corruption, but is, more importantly, uniting the people. It takes many together as one strong voice to bring positive changes, the Free Speech Experiment has begun…

Achilles Tenderloin on stage at the Skyline Wednesday May 6th 7pm

joe augustin
Achilles Tenderloin is Joe Augustin, a folk-blues songwriter from Richmond, Indiana. Joe’s music is most notable for its passionate vocals, heavily textured lyrics, and unique guitar picking style. Achilles Tenderloin, often accompanied by Aaron Nell, performs frequently in venues spanning Indiana, Ohio, and Northern Kentucky. Stronger Than Wine, Achilles Tenderloin’s third and newest album, also features Aaron Nell, whose colorful horn and fiddle arrangements breathe new life into Augustin’s songs. Nell’s horn shines brightly through the dark landscapes of Augustin’s Save My own, Daisy May, and Let The Good Times Roll. His lilting fiddle arrangements lend an older air to Augustin’s Doppler Blues and Steel Hammer Blues. The album’s four cover tunes feature Nell on fiddle as well, including songs from Blind Willie Johnson, Tommy Johnson, Leadbelly and The Toadies’ Todd Lewis. All ten tracks were recorded and produced on May 31, 2014 by award winning Piedmont style blues guitarist Chris Yakopcic at Streets Sounds Recording Studio, in Dayton Ohio. Augustin currently lives in Richmond, IN, home to historic label Gennett Records, which boasts early recordings by such artists as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Charlie Patton and many others. He has booked and organized a variety of music events, including a number of monthly concert series and a two-day outdoor festival, Big Dawg On My Trail: Grassroots Brews, Blues & arts Festival. Admission is $5 and kids 11 and under are free. The show is at 7pm.

December 15, 2014

skyline license plate template
Well, what to say? For starters, Merry Christmas to all! Secondly, thank you to all our patrons for what turned out to be the BIGGEST & BEST Christmas @ The Skyline to date. There was definitely an energy in the air last night….the cake from Sugar Coated Cakery was obliterated, the crab rangoons were vaporized, Santa’s lap was worn flat, the pinball machines were chimed out…money was raised for charity…..cameras everywhere capturing special moments…even a radio station showed up to do a piece on the Skyline. And the movies…what a great lineup of Christmas cinematic classics (and not so classics…lol) A special thanks to the dozen or so cars that stayed AFTER MIDNIGHT to watch the Drive-Insanity feature “The Magic Christmas Tree”. Last night was the last night for the Skyline until next year (keep your eyes on March 2015) and we’ll be back bigger and better than before….so get ready to do it all again. From: Joe, Cyndi, Eric, Vinnie, Jonathan, Matt, Glen, Chris, Kelly and Neighbor Ned!

It will premiere with a double feature of the first two films Corman made with future Oscar-winning Hollywood icon Jack Nicholson: the 1958 exploitation drama The Cry Baby Killer and 1960′s man-eating plant comedy Little Shop of Horrors, the latter the inspiration for the 1986 musical remake and the off-Broadway show it was based on. The channel will also feature previews of upcoming Corman productions like Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda (coming soon to a Wal-Mart nearest you) and “Corman’s Take” in which Corman and his wife and producing partner Julie Corman will offer anecdotes and behind-the-scenes trivia. Subscribers will also get to access an interview with Dinocroc‘s special effects team and special edition extended trailers for many of the films Throughout the summer Corman’s Drive-In will also offer a wide and woolly array of action, horror, sci-fi, and comedy flicks released by Corman’s various studios and production companies over the past five decades. They will include Eat My Dust (a car chase comedy starring a Happy Days-era Ron Howard), Jack Hill‘s The Big Doll House with Pam Grier (Jackie Brown) in her first major film role, Brain Dead starring Bill Paxton (Aliens) and Bill Pullman (Independence Day), 1982′s slimy and entertaining Alien rip-off Forbidden World, the original Piranha directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins), the absolutely insane Italian space opera Star Crash, and so many more.
