Inventing the Drive-In Theater

In 1931, Richard Hollingshead Jr. owned and worked in his own automotive supply store called Whiz Auto Products Company.  Always on the lookout for the next great new idea, Hollingshead noted that even though the Great Depression was in full swing, people still found money to attend movies at their local theater.  He pondered the means to combine his auto parts business with movies and dreampt of opening a deluxe gas station and auto repair shop that featured a restaurant and movies for the customers to watch while they customers waited for their car repairs to be completed.  To bring his dream to fold, Hollingshead began by experimenting with the “outdoor movie” concept (and as he progressed, the concept morphed to exclude the gas station and auto repair business).

Super Monster Movie fest 2016 is right around the corner, in fact it’s August 26th & 27th.  This the 5th year for the Monster fest at the Skyline Drive-In and the movies this year follow the theme of “Don’t Go In The House”.  Keep reading to get the line up and information about each movie including approximate showtimes.  Remember this a true dusk till dawn event with free camping so bring your tent and make a weekend of it.

Sammy Terry hosting Hammer Film Fest

On October 18th legendary horror film host Sammy Terry will be at the Skyline Drive-In.  He will be hosting our Hammer Film Fest and also performing not one but two of his famous stage shows.  He will be on hand for photos as well.  We will be showing Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Horror of Dracula (1958) and The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires ( a mash up of Hammer and the Shaw Brothers starring Peter Cushing).  This is an event you don’t want to miss.  Our Terror Trail will be opening early so the little kids can go through in the daylight.  But after dark only walk the trail if you dare.  We will be opening the gate at 5:30pm and the fun will start at 7pm.  So come early for a good spot.

Going Attractions News!!

1going-attractions-poster-812x1024Good news!  We have just added a second screening of Going Attractions: The Definitive Story of The Drive-In Movie.  We will be showing this new documentary Sunday August 25th at 9pm and Thursday August 29th at 9pm.  Prior to the screening on Thursday August 29th we will be having another Sky Lanterns launch.  So come out and see a great doc and launch lanterns with us.  The lanterns are available at the Skyline for $5 and proceeds benefit our Digital Conversion fund.  Both screenings are $5 for adults and $2 for kids 3-11 and under 3 are free.
